Welcome To The Hutchinsons Workshop
Based in rural East Anglia, the Hutchinsons woodyard has grown from modest beginnings. In its early years, the team worked out of a converted greenhouse based in the back of a local garden centre. The workshop was dedicated to preparing garden features for our landscaping projects. Now, the team has a modern yard and spacious workshop from which premium quality garden buildings and bespoke timber features are created directly for the public.
Over the years, the Hutchinsons team of craftsmen have enjoyed the challenge of designing and building a diverse range of garden buildings ranging from simple shelters to more complex buildings that have been used for home offices, outdoor kitchens and dining spaces. We have also been commissioned to build a couple of stand-alone, holiday annexes, featuring shower rooms, kitchens, and bed-sitting rooms.
Outside of the Essex workshop, we have a small selection of display buildings so that customers can view a range of buildings which feature various design elements to help our clients formulate their ideas in consultation with our design team.

Looking For The Perfect Bespoke Garden Room?
Our main objective it to design and create garden buildings that are scaled to fit our clients’ needs and will enhance their gardens rather than having to be screened from view. Our bespoke garden rooms were originally reserved for our own landscaping projects, but we began to get interest from other garden designers and landscapers who also recognised the huge benefits that our hand built structures could bring to their own projects – and from these small beginnings, Hutchinsons Garden Buildings has grown to become one of the foremost builders of bespoke garden rooms in the region.
Clients often come to us with a rough idea of their needs from which we then work with the individual customers to develop these ideas into a practical building meeting, and often excelling their first list of requirements. Hutchinsons have developed a range of sample building designs which many clients prefer to choose a basic theme and then develop and enhance to suit their individual needs – though many enjoy working with us to create a truly unique design specifically designed for them.
All of our buildings are individually designed and constructed using the highest quality raw materials in our new workshop near Colchester in Rural Essex.

Hutchinsons Landscapes have displayed show gardens at many of the region’s horticultural shows over the years, collecting many prizes along the way for our innovative designs.
Most prestigious of these was for our RHS award winning courtyard garden, presented at the Bicentennial Hampton Court Flower Show, which confirmed the status of the team at Hutchinsons as one of the leading landscaping firms in the region.

Home Offices & Garden Leisure Rooms
The quality construction of our garden buildings has meant that many customers use our garden buildings as home offices or outside hobby rooms. The insulated lining and weather sealed, double glazed doors and windows allow these beautifully crafted buildings to be warm and dry through the year, producing truly versatile rooms that can be used year-round.
The Hutchinsons design service allows our clients to work with our team to create their own truly bespoke building. Alternatively, we are often asked to modify one of our standard designs to tailor their layout to best suit their individual needs.
With the freedom allowed by the current planning laws, most homes can now benefit from this cost-efficient extension to their living space. We have enjoyed working on a truly diverse range of projects including; garden offices, home gyms, outdoor dining rooms with associated kitchens, artist studios & hobby / craft rooms and a holiday studio annex featuring bathroom and kitchen facilities.

Bespoke Design Features We Offer At Hutchscapes
Our bespoke garden rooms are designed & built for year-round use with fully lined & insulated interiors & double-glazing fitted throughout.
Rubber weather strips are fitted around all door and window openings to eliminate any draughts. Thick Rockwool insulation is fitted to all wall and ceiling voids which is hidden behind a choice of linings (T&G, beaded MDF or plasterboard).
Power points and lighting are fitted into the walls and roof during manufacture in styles and positions specified by the client to create truly personal rooms, specifically laid out to suit each customer’s individual requirements.
To keep these garden rooms warm, we also fit from a range of thermostatically controlled heating systems including oil filled radiators and underfloor heating mats.
All of the timbers used in our buildings are pressure treated with a preservative to ensure long life, but we then enhance the exterior finish with a painted finish, which further protects the cladding timbers. As an alternative, we can also upgrade the exterior with a Hardie Board cladding board – a cement-based timber substitute that needs minimal maintenance.
For clients wanting a truly maintenance free building, we can fit either UPVC or Aluminium doors and windows – even Bi-Fold doors for those wanting to create an indoor space that can fully open up to the wider garden setting.
